Herald Respray/Restoration

Hi

I am looking at having my Herald bodywork restored and resprayed. I am East Sussex

The car is a 1966 1200 saloon and mostly original and in good nick.

Its at the stage in its life that it needs stripped down to find any hidden nasties on the body and underside etc. and made all shiny again.

Can anyone recommend a restoration expert? Nearby would be helpful but happy to get it transported if some distance.

Thanks

Chris

Local ish to me then.
And can I recommend anywhere local? afraid not.

Bearing in mind the costs of restoration, spending time/cash on transport is money very well spent if the place is good.

depending on budget, Triumph autoclassique is excellent if yo want a top end job, and there are others at other budgets too.

If the car is drivable, why not bring it along to the local triumph meeting, the anchor pub, ringmer. Next wed (4th) is the day to be there.

Mine was restored by Chic Doig, not local, some 30 miles north of Edinburgh but the job was second to none.  When the car was valued for insurance purposes by Mike Crewes of the TSSC he couldn't tell if it was a mint original or a very well restored one.  That good.  Saying that, the restoration did cost over GBP12000.

Thanks for your replies

I quite fancy Triumph Autoclassique if its recommended.

Car is a runner Clive - thanks for invite. Too much going on this time to meet up. When do you normally meet? Ever Month?

I have had it for 4+ years but it has not been garaged the past 2 so its been getting a bit of a battering.

It goes in for a MOT on Monday

12k is a lot of cash but that was a ground up restoration on a new old stock chassis and many, many other new old stock parts including then bonnet.  It was probably 75% new old stock in the whole car!  £4000 will get you a first class job repaint and with serious change.  What colour(s) is/are your car?

Best that you are under no illusions about how expensive restorations are. And that little scabby area can end up being very expensive.....

In fact the parts are not the expensive bit, it is the time to get them to fit correctly, something many local places (generally, not just sussex) do not do.

There is a chappie on here who does some restoration/respray work at reasonable cost. I suspect autoclassique may be more expensive that you are budgeting for.

Thanks agin for the feedback.

I'll try and post some pics at the end of this post.

I saw this herald for sale about 4+ years ago. Its exact same colour and interior to my 1st car which I passed my test in the 70's

I kept pushing the limits of adhesion (which is very easily found) and sadly about 6 months after being let loose on the road I pranged it into a bridge and wrote it off.

Heralds become like your 1st serious girlfriend - Fondly remembered.

i owe it to my 1st car to keep this one and have it looking good.

Here is what she looks like.

Bill

I have been told that before.

However you can't see it on the photo's but on the bonnet now there is tiny holes where the green paint has gone and the primer is showing through.

Maybe it has had a touch up spray in the past or some chemical has eaten in to the paint. Plus there is rust on the wing that indicates a bit of infilling so I need to sort that out.

It is all pretty tidy underneath but again it could do with a strip down of the under-seal to find any nasties.

It brings back very fond memory's of my first car, a similar Conifer Green 1200 Saloon MVC 371G but with a Black interior.

I bought it in the Summer of 1981, not around anymore unfortunetly

The Red interior looks great with the Conifer Green exterior

Looks nice and original in the pictures. If the photos tell no lies, I'd be trying to keep it the way it is,

Cheers,
Bill.

I have to agree with Bill. Even if it ends up needing a fair amount of paintwork, a truly skilled painter should be able to match not only the color but the "look" (depth of shine, etc.) so that whatever gets painted will blend with the rest of the car. As they always say, cars are only original once! 🙂

  • 2 years later...

Just to resurrect an old post of mine and update. Has it really been 2 and a half years /static/blahsmilies/shock.png

The car has spent the last year going through a complete restoration. It should be ready around May - The body work and chassis were all sound but its all been stripped and re-done. It should be good for another 60 years. /static/blahsmilies/smiley.png

Its going into a nice insulated - dehumidified garage so it's getting the best I can offer

I've attached 2 pictures - but its so long since I posted I don't know if I've done it correctly

That's nice , Excellent Panel Fit too, especially the Doors, original Door skins by the look of it maybe?

Reminds me again of my First Car a 1200 Herald bought in 1981 for the sum of £175, that was Conifer with a Black Interior, no longer with us unfortunately, despite me coating the Chassis and Underside in Engine Oil!

Looking good! What shade of green is that?

It is/should be Conifer Green. The bottom pic from the back looks very Minty Green - this is more a trick of light with the iphone. The top pic is more accurate.

garyf - yes all original panels as far as I am aware - Its was pretty rust free as a previous owner had it garaged for about 20 years. I think the garage must have been nice and dry. The only filling seems to have been a bit on the bonnet drivers side and rust wise one of the outriggers.
