I have a Les Leston wheel i was restoring,i also have an original LL boss still in its box for the Herald/Vitesse,i will take a look and see if its as you say. I`m not aware if the horn pencils come in different lengths,i had the same issue with the pencil being too fat for a Mountney boss,i just rubbed it down with emery paper. On my other car the wheel came modified with a copper disc on the push that earths when pressed thus sounding the horn. Steve

Steve P replied to TedTaylor's topic in Round Britain Reliability Run (RBRR)
2012 with Bill Goodwin in my Vitesse... Accelerate up a hill coming out of a roundabout after leaving Lands End,get overtaken by our rear offside wheel as the shaft and hub part company.miss the rest of the game. -

Hello Clive, I went to watch a track day there last year, they were not letting more than a couple of cars on track at a time and really short sessions,a real snoozefest. Steve

Pictures of the gearbox would be good to identify saloon or Vitesse box, also which carbs you have might point to 2 or a 2.5? Steve

My solution.. (2.5 engine) Alloy Rad from Radtec racing,Spal 11 inch sucker fan and thermo switch in the top hose. This pic doesn`t show it but it has a closed system with an aluminium tank next to the clutch and brake cylinders with a feed tapped into the thermostat housing and return from the inlet manifold. Haven`t tested it abroad but a six hour journey up the M6 in August crawling along never saw the temp go over 3/4 on the gauge. S

You are correct the breather you describe was for the Strombergs which would have been on your car originally,i have HS6 SU`s on mine but did away with the breather and vented it into a catch tank+filter. Top tip:if you have seen an Automec brake pipe kit,the yellow caps on the pipes when delivered are perfect for blanking of the carb vents. Steve

Well i have removed the solenoid and made up a new heavy cable from the starter to the battery.I also removed the link wire on the starter and extended the red/white down to the starter. I have grounded the engine as well with the old solenoid cable. Now the car has no electrics,is the heavy brown wire on the solenoid the main fuse/ignition feed?,if so i will make a new one from the battery. Cheers Steve

I had another look, the solenoid smells like burnt Bakelite, its a repro one. i think one of the terminal contacts is duff. I am going to do away with it and run new cables to the starter and ground the engine properly. Steve

Doing a few bits to the Vitesse today, tried to start it for the first time in a couple of weeks due to work. It cranked slowly, that`s not unusual as it a fairly tight 2.5 high-ish compression. After about 15 seconds there was a smell of burning and smoke from under the bonnet,i found the lead to the starter from the solenoid overheating and the - terminal on the battery boiling hot. Any ideas? i thought maybe engine earth?. It has a high torque starter btw. Steve

This is the combo i have in my Vitesse, whilst i only ran the 2l as standard,i am very happy with the way the 2.5 and saloon box drives.I wouldn`t say i drive slowly either(no no.11 starts though) I had the 3:27 rebuilt with the stronger(TR7?) carrier. The engine showed 170bhp on a rolling road and gives good power and loads of torque from low revs.Even on old SU`s. Steve

Spares ...Future 10CR`s/Continental trips
Steve P replied to Velocita Rosso's topic in Ten Countries Run (10CR)
Quote Rob: The spares list used to work very well and saved phoning 10 or more people to get an idea if they had a spacific spare part. It used to Be a lot of messing but was worth it (IMHO). I was very surprised that no one volunteered to take over the compilation of the list when I stepped down from compiling them. Sorry to hear they are not a current part of ct events. Rob I offered to run the spares list on the RBRR when Rob stopped but it was decided by the organizers not to run a list. Having had the same failure as VR in Cornwall in 2012, i got a phone call asking if i had a spare shaft on board for another Herald,if i did i would have been fitting it to my car. Steve -
I have a Facet Silver top pump in my 2.5 Vitesse running HS6 carbs too.Mounted in the boot next to the tank. I have a Malpassi regulator in the engine bay mounted on the valance and an overide switch in the car. No problems after three years. I believe Huco pumps are an option and you don`t need a regulator. Jigsaw sell blanking plates and gaskets for the mechanical pump if you cant make one. Steve

Don`t know where you are but i removed the diff from my 13/60 in favour of a rebuilt 3:63. It is the original, never removed i believe as the car was in a garage for 30 years,it was very quiet although i think the seals had hardened over the years as it did leak. Steve
