I remember that. I think they widened the bonnet or tub or something? I have also seen a vitesse V6, that worked well.

However, these days you may as well use a more powerful, smaller, more fuel efficient 4 cylinder engine, plenty to choose from  :)

Ford V6...... (even) heavier and thirstier than a Triumph 6 and not necessarily more powerful.  As Clive says, plenty of better options.  I'm liking the Zetec SE route. 1.6 from Focus / 1.7 from Puma - light, all alloy construction 100+ bhp standard 140+ easy to achieve.

my dad scrapped a V6 granada because he got about 10-15mpg out of it or something useless. ok so a much heavire car, but unless youve got a fully tuned and rebuilt one being given to you for free, much better options as stated.

Yes but not as nice as a V8!

Personally I don't think you can beat the sound of a howling 6 cylinder!

Apart from this. ;)

Hello Nick,

my 3 litre Scimitar is rated at 132bhp, it doesn't feel as lively as my (slightly tweaked) P.I. saloon. Also quite a lazy sort of engine in standard form.

Not sure how the Reliant compares in weight to the saloon?

3 litre has lots of low end torque but soon runs out of puff - bit like the 125 horse PI is suspect.  132 horse PI engine keeps on going........  Years ago, a friend had a Capri 3.0S with some sort of Weslake tuned lump in there - now that did go very well (have no idea what the hp was) but had a catastrophic drink problem!  He ran out of brakes one night on a scatter rally and flattened a lot of hedge with it - and that was then end of that.

Ford SA used to put the 2.5 version in mk3 "Big Six" Cortina  and later on in the mk4 as the XR6 (latter may have been 3L, I forget).  They made a nice noise and gave relaxed progress but were also very thirsty and were reputed to have "interesting" handling.  Petrol was cheap and the roads straightish.

A yowling straight 6 does the business for me - v6 not far behind  :)

I was running one in the 80's when I didn't know any better and there wasn't an affordable equivalent!
(It's taken until last year to get the firewall back together tidily).
In short order I'd say:
Fits well if you can get hold of swan-neck inlet manifold to stop carbs sticking through bonnet.
(Engine mounts are flat on the chassis just about, no issue).
Sounds bloody good - especially through the Bell pipes (I was living in Swindon at the time so used to pop round and pester them) - and fuel consumption wasn't hideous. Mine was a well-ordered lump and the Spitfire is a light car.
Survived OK on a Peugeut radiator (from a 4-door 205 as I recall).
Had to chop the tunnel about and point the gearstick strangely to get hold of me knob.
Ummm, didn't handle all that well - at all - even on 8" rims and 205's.
Happy days!
Yes, I will scan some photos one of these days. It's good to own up to the shameful things you did as a kid.  :B

They commented that you could still hear the guy in the M5 after he went round teh corner.

If I stand in my garden I can still hear a Triumph Straight 6 as it pulls out the junction 1/2 a mile away as it echos across the fields.

But the Subaru was louder.
