heraldhabitat
Hi now does anyone know if my 2000 will fry my satnav if I plug it in while it's dtill positive earth? I don't want to change it at the moment as the original radio still functions
CharlieB
Don't see why it should provided you get the polarity right ie connect the positive connection of the sat nav to the cars earth & vice versa.
Clive
Good idea, but may be worth getting a wired adapter, so that you do not mess with the sat nav lead. Just picked a 4 way one up for a quid from the local poundshop.Clive
sparky_spit
Also, although highly unlikely, if the satnav has any exposed metal parts they will be at +12V and at risk of shorting to any exposed metalwork in the car.
Clive
metal! I suspect they are all made of recycled plastic bags or something, probably biodegradable too.
Steve P
Also remember modern cars have stabilised voltages for the cig lighters etc.,sat nav`s might not like the voltage going from below 11 up to 14 or 15 volts as some of our cars might.Steve
Deleted User
My phone certainly doesnt enjoy the unstabilised voltage from the cig lighter i fitted to my car for charging things but my ipod doesnt mind it so i'd just give it a go if i was you and see what happens! just reverse the way you wire in the cig lighter? rotoflex
Hmmm....why not just install another voltage stabiliser in front of the cigarette lighter? The OEM-type mechanical one might do better, as I dunno if the mystery solid-state aftermarket ones would handle the load of whatever might be plugged in there (like a resistance-heater cigarette lighter).
