Cost of doing the 10CR

I decided to work out how much I spent getting the car ready and doing the event....

I estimate I have spent ~£3000, some of that was on long time work on the car that needed doing, such as new tyres all round (Rainmaster excellent and well tested this year), new 3.63 diff, new mirrors with convex lenses, new sat nav, lots of little bits ie new torches, fire extinguisher.
Very nice Hotel rooms, I did it with my wife so wanted nice places to stay.... 🙂
And about £600 on fuel, ranged from 32 to 42 MPG

So lot of money for a trip around Europe, some of the money were really car improvements that will last for a few years, but I have no regrets and had a great time.

I bought new uniroyals, £200 but used about 10%, so call that £20?

Similar mpg, reckon £650 door to door.

Hotels and food about £800

Entry was £240 I think.

Ferries were about £150?

New exhaust clamp (only failure, as we got to rolduc) and 1/4 litre of oil. Total £5

For the 2 of us.

Just under 2k for us. Probably didn't have such nice hotels, but pretty good.

I reckon excellent value for such a great week away.

Hi Mike

I was wondering what the cost of such an event would be through a travel agency who specialise in such trips, albeit it wouldn't be a Triumph only run. I'm sure it would come out considerably more costly if a classic car, hotels and itinerary was included for the trip (for example a company who supply Trabants (God forbid🤣) do something along these lines!

My fuel bill was similar along with hotel/grub and coffee costs. Expenditure on the car I did not necessarily count in as it would have been on jobs that really needed doing anyway. The organisation (thanks to Ellis Stokes and team), and the very reasonable cost of £130 per crew member made the whole trip enjoyable and at a relatively attractive cost.

So, what's your wish list for the next 10CR? Could we, to do the impossible, get up through the north to see the Northern Lights for instance??!

PS Is this forum using a US spell checker damn it??

I never work out the final cost of these events. I take part to have a great time, drive some great roads and have a good laugh, so I'm not bothered what the final fee is.

I don't work out my costs or MPG on the RBRR either. it's all irrelevant to me. The fun in doing the event far outweighs any costs. 🙂

Spain, Picos de Europa area and Pyrenes, ferry to Spain and then drive back thru France. But it takes a long time and gets expensive.

You can still camp if you wish John…. Most prefer not to it seems. Apart from the last night at Rolduc.  Hasn’t been driving all night since 2011 though.  It’s not as hard-core as it was.

I wonder if it is time for a reset, and go back to the hard-core (and much cheaper!!) days, also make it more relaxing as you can cover the distance at a much slower pace.

My thoughts is you have 24 hours to drive what is being done in 8 at the moment, so you can stop and smell the roses so to speak. More nicer, but slower, roads, time to stop for lunch etc without worrying you will be late getting to hotel.

Agreed. No going back to work more knackered than when you left there!

Also stop calling the event the 10CR, because then you are limited to the same 10 countries all the time. (Although this event was a 9CR because the event started in France, finished in the Netherlands and never went to England in between. 🙂)

I'd rather do fewer countries, but different ones.

The last 10CR with night time driving (through the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria) was in 2015 😉

Ah yes - how could I forget that? We didn’t spend long in the Czech Republic. Bumpy roads. Bailed and returned to nice smooth German roads.  Then trying to sleep in a lay-by in Austria and being woken by tarts touting for trade….🙄

Where's the achievement in trundling around any number of countries, slowly and in daylight, in the knowledge of a comfy hotel bed before dark?    If you want foreign travel, there are any number of "Tours" that offer that, and if you don't just commute in your Triumph.

The Old 10CR was something to be proud of.   I know I've warned of the effect of fatigue, but my concern is more about immediately after the actual event.

Well, in completing 2 (2015, 2017) and attempting 1 (2022) I'd say that:

  1. We don't trundle, nor travel slowly.
  2. For a single driver crew with a navigator with health issues, it's a challenge.
  3. As a person who suffers from anxiety and mental health issues, it's a challenge.
  4. Using 40-50 year old cars, it's a challenge
  5. For us a combination of seeing those wonderful places and completing (2/3rds of the time) the run is achievement enough.

I have no problem with people wanting a more "hardcore" event - by all means organise something more akin to the original 10CR. Nor do I have a problem with a scenic tour. To me the current 10cr strikes a happy medium between the 2.
