Surely replacing the Lucas alternator with a modern one like the Nippon Denso lightweight versions will give a cleaner power supply? It's not original, but then again neither is megajolt!

Yes, probably.  I use a nice Bosch one from a Mk5 Escort - 75A and much better regulation too.  Filter is still a wise move though.

I'm back! Not quite given up yet!

It's running, but only on 3 cylinders.

2 4 & 6 are the cylinders which fire, the others just spark.

The pairs are 1&6, 5&2, 3&4, the first 3 cylinders (1,5, & 3) in the firing order aren't firing at the right time, they do have a strong spark however.

The firing order of my coil is different to the one in the manual, but this hasn't been changed since the car was running well (and on all 6!).

I'm pretty sure the toothed wheel hasn't moved, all the various marks still line up and if it had moved, wouldn't all the cylinders be out and I'd have a total non-starter?

I know the 3 non-firing cylinders have a spark, it's also a big fat one.

What am I missing, apart from the common sense to give up and re-fit the carbs? ;D

Thanks
Andy

Andy,

It's wasted spark so it fires on the exhaust stroke too- that should make it easier to not get wrong. It doesn't really matter if the firing order of the coil is different as long as they are paired together correctly and in the right order to begin with- it's just a case of moving the HT leads around until correct.

It sounds like a dodgy EDIS module- that's the only thing that instructs the order in your system.

James and everyone who's shown an interest in this (at times) desperate sounding thread.

It's now running as it should! :)

And I’ve just learnt (re-learnt) an important lesson, don't assume and don't overlook the bl**ding obvious!

The live wire to the injector bank had broken!

I believe that the original non-start was caused a alternator spike corrupting the software, that's now (hopefully!) taken care of by a 40 amp filter on the MS power source and I'll be fitting a modern Bosch alternator too, as soon as!

Thanks everyone for help, advice and support, I'm off to book a spot at the Nats (and do a bit of tuning!)

I used this one, pretty fast delivery (from Hong Kong!) and they sent it as a gift too, so no customs!

I think it works too, at least it gets warm while the engine is running and I haven't had a repeat of the problem yet!

Bigger then I thought though!
