I have a Triumph 2500 gearbox (well the casing anyway), plus J-type O/D fitted to my Vitesse. I had to have a custom shortened gearlever made, (thanks Mike Papworth).

Photos can all be found in my Vitesse albums on webshots - about early 1996.

Before getting my Type 9 I spent some time asking this forum for advice (thanks guys), so I was
well prepared for extending the cover. I have modified it further as it was very close to the handbrake.
The box itself changes quite nicely, but 1st is very low even on the Ford CR box. In actual fact this is less
of a burden than I thought it would be. I do have a small, but annoying oil leak from the speedo cable
oil seal and despite removing the box and fitting a new one it persists.so I may have casing distortion.
Also the gear stick vibrates in fifth, but I have a fix lined up for that.
The wife managed to find a Sierra manual in a charity shop, just in case, so everything is set for years of
trouble free changing.
5k miles so far.

The 2500 box looks like a nice install but i dont want to have to weld the chasis rails as mine has just come back from a very expensive paint job.  I should have test fitted the type 9 before it went to paint but like a fool i fell for the "no you don't need to mod the tunnel" comments that i had been told!!!!!!!!

yes well that certain supplier has some good kit, and i can't fault the part i bought from him, but i have to say he was somewhat economical with the truth with me too. nonetheless you'll be pleased with the end result i'm sure.

I am very happy with the general quality of the kit supplied and also with most other parts that i have purchased from him.  I will be using him again i'm sure.. the point of this thread was to make sure that i had done everything as i should have and that i'm not being a complete tit!!!  I am a bit disapointed that he was somewhat economical with the truth with me also.

Yeah the 5 speed changed the car for the better.
Will swap the 411 for a 389 this summer.

I actualy like the new shifted location. In a far better position.

But I now have to edit or make a new tunnel cover. When I bought my newton kit I ordered extra carpet.

  • 3 years later...

Well almost 4 years after fitting the Type 9 it is out of the car again.  Following my completion of the RBRR last October the gearbox started to make some funny noises.  I sent it to BGH GEARTECH who are ford gearbox specialists. Firstly may I say their service is a little on the slow side due to their workload but what great people to deal with.

When i bought my type9 kit it contained a "fully and complete refurbished Type9 gearbox"  What a load of bollox!!!!!!

Chris at BGH says it's just about the worst gearbox he has seen in the last 15 years!  It was very, very dirty inside with all the dogs being completely filled with hard carbon like stuff, the rear needle roller was in several pieces, speedo drive was just floating around the inside of the gearbox, front of the casing that the input shaft main bearing locates was oversize probably due to the main bearing spinning in the casing.  Chris also said that it looked like a very high mileage box that had done little motorway use.  He also said that this gearbox has definatly never, never been refurbished. It has been apart but never refurbished!

Total cost of rebuild as is £515+vat
rebuild to heavy duty £685 +vat
rebuild to heavy duty with longer first gear £950+vat
Aluminium casing and lid £365+vat

I have asked him to rebuild to heavy duty with the aluminium case (as mine is scrap anyway)  I am quite happy with first gear ratio now I have the 3.27 diff

I bought this kit so that I could fit and forget.  Ripoff traders at it again.  I wish i could something about it but the kit is now 5 years old so I don't think I will have any case against the trader involved :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

Sadly I suspect that is all going to be history and too difficult to challenge. The type 9 conversion seems to be touted as an easy swap, when in fact it is far from it.

I have a "long first" t9 in the spitfire chassis. That was stripped and checked over by my good friend who is magic with gears and things. He also shortened the first motion shaft.

As to BGH, NEVER heard anything but praise for them. The moral is, if you want a good T9, buy from them....(but to be fair, most seem OK even after all these years)

Ask Chris if he's willing to put his opinions in writing as an independent specialist and go from there. Assuming you have the original bill stating it's refurbished. If you haven't then you can't even prove you got it from them.

Yes i do have the original bill of sale for the conversion but proving that 5 years use hasn't caused the problems could be difficult and expensive to prove in court.  lesson learnt

:( draining - jsut about to have one fitted to mine and had it checked over before fitting, it also had a few bits and bobs that needed some TLC (not bought as part of a kit tho - that's pretty damn shoddy!!)

Shoddy!  understatement of the decade from where i'm sitting 8)  Outright theft is more accurate!!  You will love the Type 9 it is a nice box to use even in the state that mine was!  Can't wait to have the new one in to see what it's like now.

Reconditioned Gearbox arrived back yesterday complete wiith aluminium casing and lid.  This has now been built using heavy duty bearings and a larger needle roller on the front of the layshft.  Built to 220BHP and 200ftlbs torque.  Hopefully I shouldn't be able to break this one!!

I have also managed to locate needle roller bearings for the end of the crank shaft rather than the phosphor bronze spigot bush as supplied in the original conversion kit.

Engine and gearbox should be back in tomorrow.

Can a normal one not take that power then? I almost got my hands on a 200bhp motor when I was looking around for a Zetec lump. I worked out the power to weight ratio before considering it. I went a bit moist at the idea.  :B

Standard type 9 will handle 145bhp and 160ftlbs of torque.  I already have 150bhp and 160ftlbs of torque so went for the heavy duty build.
