Whats the best oil to use

I've just bought a can of Valvoline VR1 20/50 for my Vitesse. Supposed to be good stuff with good protection especially at high temperatures. I'll see how it goes. It was nearly £30 for 5 litres.
I used to use Comma Classic 20/50 which is considered to be okay but I noticed it 'blackening' after less than 2000 miles and wondered if  high temperatures were spoiling it so thought I'd give the VR1 a try.
The Halfords Classic stuff is supposed to be okay (also made by Comma?) and some people swear by Castrol Classic but I've never tried it.
The guys at my local classic car place recommend Penrite 20/60 but it's hard to get hold of locally and they'd run out so I went for the VR1.

Like Andy not sure if you can get Castrol in the UK, I use Castrol 5W40 in my Herald's here in the States.  Castrol makes oil for older cars.

I think the most important thing about oil is that you use a good brand you trust and never mix brands or type.  Change oil and filter acording to your driving habbits on a strict sechudle.  Likewise allways use a good brand filter.

Ask what is the best and you will get many answers.  In short their is no perfect answer as the age and use of our cars are not the same.

Used Mobil 1 15W/50 for ages (when I didn't have an oil cooler!!) but it almost 100 bucks for 5 litres now - Castrols about $40

Closest we have is Cstrol Edge Sport 10/60

Appears to be specially formulated for BMW.

40+ for 4 litres

I wonder how much it is on trade.

Am using Morris' 'Golden Film' 20/50....no complaints & not too expensive. There's a young lad who's got a Peugeot 206 turbo diesel at the paint shop, behind my pals unit & he was saying he's got 'racing' oil in, which cost about £70 for 5 litres!!!!...(Certainly would'nt be doing 3,000m. oil changes, if it cost anything like that!!!!)

Ah, but that racing oil means he has now got an extra 25bhp and 20mp added to his fuel consumption. And it now handles like a Ferrari. At least that is what I heard down the pub.

What a fool, a decent diesel oil is all that is needed in that car.
In Triumphs, a decent 20/50, and if going on track or driving hard then VR1 or similar. I noticed there are  synthetic 10/60 oils available, they would be pretty good I expect as long as they have enough zinc and phosphorus in them. In fact VR1 is available in a 10/60, not badly priced either...(still about £30 for 5L though)
