keith417
I have recently bought 1963 Triumph Herald saloon. Really thrilled. My first 3 cars (back in the 70's) were Heralds. However, the carpet needs replacing. I've looked around the Forum to see what's been talked about before but not a lot of information. I've also contacted a number of manufacturers but am still not sure what to do. Would value anyone's experience in tackling this problem and best solution, things to look out for etc. I particularly want a moulded carpet as I can't see a flat carpet working well around the gear box tunnel. The original carpet is a loop pile. So far I've only found one supplier - Rimmers, all the others offer short cut pile. Has anyone used Rimmers? Was a good fit? What's the quality like? Are there any other suppliers? There must be lots of folks who have replaced Herald carpets - any help / advice would be appreciated.
Clive
I believe the only manufacturer of moulded carpets is Newton Commercial. And they are the cut pile ones. As sold by all the retailers. there are plenty of "stitched to shape" carpets on the market, some look OK when done (probably with plenty of help) and others just look like they would fit a cortina better.... keith417
Thanks for your comments, Clive. Yes, I contacted Newton Commercial and they're sending me a sample of their carpet. I'll see what the quality is like before making a choice.
DougBGT6
I got a sample from TSSC shop, as Clive says they all come from Newton. It was pretty poor quality, reminded me of a plastic pan scourer and for £400+ I decided, no!
Encom
I've been trying to track down a good set in loop pile without much luck short of getting material and having them made. There is a replica early Porsche loop pile carpet you can get that looks pretty good. But it's a lot of effort to go to, when it's one of those items that I thought you would be able to buy in the correct material (loop verses cut), with the correct edging, be acceptable quality (moulded would be good for a better fit) and not cost the earth. Fordski
I've just put in a set of Newton carpets and they fit OK but agree the finish is rather disappointing with the cut pile. Apparently the original loop pile Vitesse carpets were made by Wilton, however what I have now is a vast improvement on the 'front-room' carpet someone put in 20 odd years ago. Probably the cut pile works better in black too in terms of appearance, and obviously doesn't show the dirt as much.
heraldcoupe
There is a manufacturer in Australia that appears to have a good match for the original Triumph loop-pile carpet. They produce moulded carpets using this material, however there are none for Triumphs in their range. The company won't supply outside of Australia or New Zealand. I've tried several times to obtain samples via various third parties, if only to sattisfy my own curiosity but I'm afraid no-one with the right contacts has been sufficiently motivated to pursue the supplier.http://www.knoxautocarpets.com.au/colours/Cheers,Bill. Keith
I put Newton carpets in my convertible 20 years ago, they've done 46,000 miles since then and still look OK.Arguably they are a lot harder wearing than the original woollen ones.K
Mark Hammond
Ah but they don't look original. I too have explored the Australian route that Bill covered. That loop pile carpet is near identical to the original but for what ever reason they won't deal further afield than the Antipodes. From their website the carpet probably is mouldable since it is on a polypropylene backing. I was tempted to buy some, have it shipped to an Australian contact of mine and have her ship it to me here in the UK. I would then approach Newton Commercial about using it for a one off job. The cost however would be phenomomenal and the results unpredictable as the mouldable qualities are unknown.Mark

Mark Hammond
I am pretty sure that there is a large content of wool as they are apt to shrinking if washed in a washing machine. Ask me how I know.... ;)M.

Stu 1986
I'm going to use the set of tufted black carpets my car came with, they're not in the worse condition. Seldom used in fact. I attacked them with the Dyson, 8 years of being stored on top of a cupboard in my garage, and whatever muck was on already nearly filled the cylinder!!! Pete Lewis
here's a cut and bound supplier with variety of pile mixeshttp://www.classicmotorcarpets.co.uk/pages/Classic%20Car%20Carpets%20for%20many%20classic%20vehicles%20upholstery.htmno idea how good or bad they are but price looks reasonable. , having had bound ,loose and stick I found moulded far better Pete
Paul Garvey
The benefit of the polypropylene backed carpet is it should allow a degree of moulding with something like a blow hair dryer.
Jonathan Joyce
Just picked up on this old thread. Some of you may be interested to hear that I spoke to Newton Commercial last year about loop pile Herald and Vitesse carpets after noticing they were making loop pile moulded carpets for Ford Escorts. The chap I spoke to was interested and said they would do a trial, which they did making a set of black VItesse loop pile carpets for an owner who I mentioned this to in the TSSC forum. He seems pleased with them and they look good in the photos, so I have ordered a grey set for my 12/50, which are being made next week. I'll try and upload a few photos when they arrive. Newton's have now included these in their official product line, which you can find on their website.
