Rubce Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Hi AllDo any of you have experience of these fibreglass bonnet assemblies sold by Moss?http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=18550At £256 I am thinking it might be worthwhile purchasing one instead of spending time repairing our existing metal one. A new metal one is way beyond my budget! How well does paint adhere to fibreglass?RegardsBruce
Doug Paterson Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 They are just reselling Honeybourne Mouldings bonnets. Cheaper to deal with Honeybourne direct. I was considering one and was i touch with Moss - but decided to go with a used steel one.
Clive Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 It is important to understand the amount of effort required to get most fibreglass bonnets looking half decent too. They are not a straightforward fit, usually requiring all fittings (eg the bonnet cone panels, top grille section etc) to be transferred from a steel one. No holes are precut (not a huge issue, but fibreglass eats jigsaw blades very very quickly) but the worst part is the rear wing edges are usually curved like a banana and take a lot of faffing and glassing to get correct. Not impossible, but catches many people out.Oh, and I had one (bought secondhand but unfitted, no holes cut etc) which was about an inch shorter and narrower than the steel one!! Got it sorted in the end.....
CHRIS211083 Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 If you want a Fibre glass bonnet then speak to Graham at T6. His Bonnets are about £600 but they fit and come with all the bits made in fiberglass. Top quality and will last a life time.Chris.
Clive Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 ^^^good point. The cheap fibreglass ones are just that,. cheap. The T6 are excellent, but it is a case of you get what you pay for.

GT6Craig Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Bruce, which part of your bonnet is shot? There is a guy on eBay selling wings and inner arches he's cut from various scrap bonnets...I bought a set for £50 and have just unpicked the welds and the panels are good to go again.I'd stick with metal all the way...unless your building something intended to be light weight.
MerlinsTriumph Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Bruce, not sure how bad your metal bonnet is but I have a metal one that I'm trying to sell. It needs a little bit of work on the wings but nothing major. My only experience of fibre glass stuff is when I had a boot lid in fibre and it stuck up too highCheers
Rubce Posted October 6, 2012 Author Posted October 6, 2012 HiThanks for all your responses to-date.The specific areas of concern on the existing bonnet are as follows:-a) various holes in the NS wing. To replace the entire wing or patch?b) the area at the NS rear edge near where the bonnet buffer is located (see photo below). Awkward to access the rear of this area but to the buffer mount, plus has a folded edge.c) rust in the seams where both wings meet the main bonnet. How the heck do I eliminate it? I don't want it reappearing along the seam shortly after I have resprayed the car!RegardsBruce
GT6Craig Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Hmmm...Is there anywhere these cars don't rot...In that case I'd buy a steel one that needed repairs in the places I could reach, i.e. lower wings and arches. It will cost a bit more than a fibreglass one but will save you much more heartache in the long run.

Rubce Posted October 7, 2012 Author Posted October 7, 2012 Hi AllI think I will have a go at repairing the existing metal one first as I don't believe I have anything to loose. I think I will look at cutting off the buffer mount, patching the bonnet behind it and then fit a new mount. If I fail, the worst that can happen is that I have to purchase another second hand metal one.RegardsBruce
Tim Bancroft Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Got to agree, I never seen a Fibeglass bonnet (Apart from a T6) that does not have major fit issues.Even the new steel assemblies are far from brilliant.
sparky_spit Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 I echo all the above. I fitted a Honeybourne one about 4 years ago and it took many, many hours to get it looking as bad as it does.
Dicky Blighter Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Just fitted one to mine as temporary measure while I rebuild the steel one - they fit where they touch - and they dont touch in many places ;DMind you they are about 30kg lighter than a steel one :) - but that makes the front end sit high :(

Doug Paterson Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 I very nearly bought a Honeybourne one in August but instead paid Chic Doig £300 for a decent steel one - so competitive with HB when you take their shipping into acccountAfter evening and weekend work including some amateur cellulose spraying I ended up with this. Pic taken Saturday at the RBRR stop.Took enough work as it was to get it looking good - it had had new wings fitted by a PO which needed a bit of adjustment. Sounds like giving the FG one a miss was a good move.
Rubce Posted October 8, 2012 Author Posted October 8, 2012 Hi Has anybody got any experience of using one of these repair panels on their GT6 bonnet?http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-818626As shown in the photo I have posted previously on this thread the area around the buffer mount has corroded. I am thinking I can cut off the existing mount, let in a new section into the bonnet top and then fit this repair panel on, thereby giving me a new mount and the edge folding.CheersBruce
JensH Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 They should do; well made. But if you cut off the front wings, you should be able to remove the reinforcing panel?
Rubce Posted October 30, 2012 Author Posted October 30, 2012 Hi AllHas anyone on here got experience of the new GT6 steel bonnet assemblies which TD Fitchett sell? They seem a good lot cheaper than Rimmers.regardsbruce
stripyt6 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 My vote funilly enough is on a bonnet from T6 fabs :) ... really excellent qulaity! ... in fact I've lost count of the number of people who've been really shocked when I tell them my entire car is fibreglass
JensH Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 New Heritage bonnets are all produced at Fitchett, aren't they?Later (mk 4/1500/gt6mk3) should be better than the early ones

James1500 Posted November 3, 2012 Posted November 3, 2012 took me ages to get mine fitting half decent too, you get what you pay for with GRP stuff as long as you know what to expect
